- The bill would have allowed North Dakota’s tribal gambling facilities and charitable organizations to offer sports betting.
Across the United States, nail-biting decisions for sports gambling within state legislatures have had the gambling world in a frenzy. Various forms of sports gambling, like mobile betting, has been made legal in some states this year, with other states on their way to legalizing sports gambling. Unfortunately, North Dakota will not be apart of this sports gambling legalization anytime soon.
The North Dakota Senate has rejected sports betting bill HB 1254, which would have legalized sports gambling in a certain capacity. The vote was rejected by a landslide 7-38 vote in the Senate. The bill cleared the House last month with a second vote of 52-38 but hit a brick wall when it arrived in the Senate.
HB 1254 is a sports betting bill that, if passed, would have allowed the state’s tribal gambling establishments and charitable organizations to offer sports betting in North Dakota. The bill would have also imposed a tax on sports betting.
The bill faced rejected from practically all sides. North Dakota University Chancellor Mark Hagerott expressed his displeasure with allowing sports betting on college sports by saying it could cause tampering with sporting events and put unneeded pressure on the student-athletes.
North Dakota gamblers will have to wait for another sports gambling bill to pass through the legislature and be voted into law before they can get their hands on a land-based sportsbook in their area. Fortunately, with the climate of sports betting in North Dakota this day and age, that day may come sooner rather than later.
